Renovating a Store That Never Closed.
A 4,500 sqm flagship branch can't simply shut its doors for a renovation without losing the customers it's trying to win back. Sultan Center's Hawally branch needed a complete overhaul of its retail experience — delivered without a single day of closure.
A comprehensive retail transformation blending modern aesthetics with high-efficiency commercial flow.
The client required a complete overhaul of their 4,500 sqm flagship branch to modernize the retail experience while minimizing operational downtime.
The brief carried a constraint most renovations don't have to solve for: the store had to keep trading throughout construction. Closing a flagship branch, even temporarily, meant losing footfall to competitors and disrupting a location customers relied on daily. The renovation had to happen around the business, not instead of it.
That meant a phased strategy built from modular design elements that could be deployed section by section, with heavy structural work executed in shifts to avoid interrupting trading hours. Six months later, the branch reopened section by section as work completed — culminating in a store with modernized systems, lighting, and finishes that had never once turned customers away.

Phasing was the design decision, not an afterthought applied to it — modular elements and a shift-based construction sequence were chosen specifically because they could be executed zone by zone without shutting the store down, which shaped the renovation strategy from the earliest planning stage.

Most retail renovations assume the luxury of a closed store. This one didn't have that option — a live, trading flagship branch had to be modernized around its own operating hours, which meant the construction sequencing was as much a design problem as the finishes themselves.
Did the store close during renovation?
No — the branch continued trading throughout, with heavy construction work scheduled in shifts to avoid disrupting operations.
How long did the renovation take?
Six months, covering a full 4,500 sqm branch overhaul.
What was the renovation strategy?
A phased approach using modular design elements, allowing sections of the store to be modernized without shutting the entire branch down.
